Octopus Pals creates handmade crochet octopus for premature babies. Our Octopuses are made from 100% cotton and a super soft toy filling which makes them safe, hygienic and washable.

A crochet octopus can help comfort a premature baby and here’s why: The tentacles of the octopus are said to remind babies of their mum’s umbilical cord, and the soft knit bodies of the cuddly creatures remind them of the texture inside the womb.

According to the Poole Hospital website, the idea originated in Denmark, where researchers found that preemies who cuddled up with these cute octopuses in their incubators had more regular heartbeats, better breathing, and higher levels of oxygen in their blood. Not only that, but these babies were also less likely to pull out their monitors and tubes.

Parents that have used these crochet octopus say their babies have found great comfort in their knitted pal. When babies sleep they can easily grasp the tentacles in their tiny hands. This replicates the babies behaviour in the womb where they would play with the umbilical cord so the octopus makes them feel grounded and safe.
